CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS OF HOUSTON OPHTHALMOLOGY WOMEN (HOW)
CONSTITUTION
Article I
Name
The name of this organization shall be Houston Ophthalmology Women (HOW).
Article II
Object
The purpose of Houston Ophthalmology Women (HOW) is to create an organization for local female ophthalmologists to leverage their professional and personal connections. HOW offers members the opportunity to connect and mentor with newly practicing physicians, benefit from the professional experience of others, and network and develop their patient base. HOW shall serve three organizational purposes:
Article III Membership
There are two categories of membership:
A. Active Membership
B. Leave of Absence
A. Eligibility for Active Membership
Article IV Officers
The officers of this society shall consist of: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Executive Committee shall consist of the above officers. These officers shall be elected at the first meeting of the year and shall hold office for a maximum 2-year term limit.
Article V Duties of Officers
A. The President shall preside over all meetings, sign all checks and all other documents that require her signature, and perform all other duties that pertain to the office.
B. The Vice-President shall assist the President in the discharge of her duties, and in the absence of the President, shall perform her duties.
C. The Secretary shall keep minutes of the proceedings when deemed advisable by the presiding officer.
D. The Treasurer shall present financial reports at meetings of the Society.
E. The Executive Committee shall assist the President in directing the policies of Houston Ophthalmology Women and shall pass on applicants for membership.
Article VI Meetings
The organization shall hold two semi-annual meetings per year, in March and September, on the first Tuesday of the month.
Article VII Dues and Assessments The dues rate shall be $175 per member. The Harris County Medical Society shall handle the administration for the organization, which includes providing the secretarial and accounting functions associated with having two meetings each year and processing the membership dues. A non-member rate of $50 will be charged for attending each meeting. There is no charge for residents or medical students to attend meetings.
Article VIII Amendments This Constitution may be amended at any stated meeting by a two-thirds vote of all the Active Members present, provided that the amendment was submitted to the Society, by either mail, email or at the previous meeting.
Article IX Rules of Order Roberts Rules of Order shall be the guide in all procedures not covered by the Constitution.

- To build a strong network of female ophthalmologists in the greater Houston area inclusive of all subspecialties and practice types
- To promote and support women ophthalmologist colleagues to advance the field of ophthalmology in areas of patient care, research, and education
- To sponsor young female trainees towards achieving professional milestones

- Candidates with the following qualifications may apply for active membership:
a. Completion of a Houston Ophthalmology Women (HOW) application.
b. Membership in good standing in the Texas Medical Association.
